About Course

This course builds upon the foundational concepts introduced in Secondary 3 Chemistry and leads students into more advanced and applied topics in preparation for the Singapore-Cambridge O-Level examination. Learners will explore important chemical principles such as redox reactions, electrochemistry, energy changes in reactions, the periodic table, reaction kinetics, and a comprehensive introduction to organic chemistry.

Through a combination of concise video lessons, printable worksheets, guided examples, and topic-specific quizzes, students will deepen their understanding of both theoretical and practical chemistry. They will also develop critical thinking and analytical skills needed for experimental analysis and real-world chemical applications.

Key focus areas include:

  • Predicting and identifying redox processes using oxidation state changes

  • Understanding industrial and laboratory applications of electrolysis

  • Exploring patterns and trends across groups in the Periodic Table

  • Examining how energy changes occur during chemical reactions

  • Analysing the factors affecting the rate of chemical reactions

  • Building a solid foundation in hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, and polymers

  • Addressing sustainability and environmental issues like air quality and pollution

This course is ideal for students preparing for their O-Level examinations or anyone looking to master chemistry through structured lessons and applied learning.

Course Content

Reduction & Oxidation
Explore the concepts of oxidation and reduction through various perspectives—electron transfer, oxygen/hydrogen gain or loss, and changes in oxidation states. Learn to identify redox reactions and conduct common tests for oxidising and reducing agents.

Electrochemistry
Investigate how electrical energy interacts with chemical changes through electrolysis and the workings of electrochemical cells. Learn about ionic movement, electroplating, and hydrogen fuel cells.

Periodic Table
Discover trends in reactivity and structure in the Periodic Table. Focus on Group 1, Group 17, Group 18, and transition metals, and study their chemical behaviour and real-world uses.

Metals
This topic introduces the essential physical and chemical characteristics of metals, their position in the reactivity series, methods of extraction, and applications in daily life. Students will also explore issues such as corrosion and its prevention, linking theory with real-world applications.

Chemical Energetics
Understand how energy is transferred during chemical reactions. Learn to distinguish between exothermic and endothermic changes using energy profile diagrams.

Rate of Reactions
Explore the factors that affect reaction rates, including temperature, concentration, surface area, and catalysts. Use data to analyse trends and draw conclusions.

Organic Chemistry
Delve into hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, and polymers. Understand functional groups, reactions, and environmental impacts.

Maintaining Air Quality
Understand air composition and common pollutants. Study the carbon cycle, acid rain, ozone depletion, and sustainable solutions to mitigate pollution.
