About Lesson
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
-
Understand map scale representations such as 1 : 1000 or 1 cm = 1 km
-
Use the scale to convert between real-life and map distances (and vice versa)
-
Calculate area ratios using scale squared for distance-based map scales
🌍 Example:
If 1 cm on the map represents 5 km, then 3.2 cm = 16 km in real life.
🧠 Concept Note: Area ratios are the square of length ratios (e.g., 1 : 100 scale → area ratio is 1² : 100² = 1 : 10,000)
